How can you do your bit for better air quality in Brussels?

What can you personally do?

The results of CurieuzenAir reveal great differences in air quality. Perhaps the measurements in your street were better than you expected, but you still want to take action to do your bit for the air quality in Brussels? Or do you live near a red dot and want to see what you can do about it together with your neighbourhood? We collected a number of websites where you can find more information to take action.

Find an alternative for the car

Cars, mopeds and lorries are responsible for high concentrations of NO2, soot and particulate matter in places where people walk, cycle, sit in pavement cafes, etc. In Brussels there are a number of initiatives to help you move away from the car:

  • The LEZ-website: a complete overview of all possible alternatives to the car when travelling in Brussels
  • The Bike Experience: helps you get around on your bike in Brussels
  • The Bike Project: supports businesses in getting their employees to cycle more
  • Bruxell’AIR bonus: a mobility budget of 900 euros for Brussels residents when they decide to get rid of the car and use other means of transport
  • The Mobility Coach: a free service for Brussels residents where they can address all their mobility-related questions

Heat your home in a smart way

The heating of buildings has a limited impact on NO2 . The results of CurieuzenAir thus do not reflect the impact of heating on air quality. Nevertheless, heating has a major impact on air quality in general, e.g. as a source of particulate matter by burning wood in stoves.

Would you like to heat your home differently, or see if you can renovate your home? On renolution.brussels you will find information about all the premiums and guidance options.

What can we do together?

Would you like to use the CurieuzenAir results to mobilise your street or neighbourhood, e.g. to set up a car-sharing system with your neighbours to reduce car traffic in your area; to start up a school street; or to set up a temporary play street? Contact the urban movement BRAL, co-organiser of CurieuzenAir. They will be happy to inform you about the actions you can set up as a collective to improve the air quality in your street and, by extension, in Brussels.
